The 2010 season at Mt Ruapehu opens in late June (Mt Ruapehu).
But the walking is great anytime!
Skiing at Mt Ruapehu is one of the best reasons to stay here. Here's the thing; if you book a weeks' holiday 3 months in advance at Ohakune or National park or Taupo with the intention of getting up to the 'Mountain' as we call it, for some skiing, you of course have no guarantee of the conditions for that week and I assure you, the conditions on Ruapehu are famous for being changeable. What we can do is watch the conditions from here and go up just as they are looking good while keeping busy doing lots of other stuff in the meantime. We can arrange accommodation at short notice at our ski club (provided it is not our school holidays) or slightly more 'up-market' accommodation is also available. We have lots of ski clothing gear here and everything else can be hired on the Mountain anyway, so that means you don't have to worry about bringing a lot of bulky equipment with you and allows a very spontaneous decision to go. Due to the distance and extra accommodation involved, the trip to Ruapehu is the only exception to the 'all inclusive' pricing strategy and there will be an additional charge of about $50 pp.
Mt Ruapehu is unbeatable on a good day with fabulous views and great learner and rental facilities. Why not let us look after the kids up there while the adults enjoy the uncrowded runs. Check out the Ruapehu web site (Mt Ruapehu). and on the way up try the 100mph flying fox at (Mokai Gravity Canyon).
When was last time you skied on a volcano?
